This growing population and global community face many significant challenges, from feeding a larger population to protecting ecosystems and safeguarding public health. In 2024, Sumitomo Biorational Company’s agriculture, public health, and forest health businesses (formerly Valent BioSciences) released a comprehensive Sustainability Report to outline the actions the organization is undertaking to advance its sustainability initiatives.
2024 Global Reporting Initiatives (GRI) Standards
We are committed to building a more sustainable world for generations to come. A key part of that commitment is aligning our sustainability practices with the GRI Standards. As we continue to establish baseline reporting metrics, we look forward to transparently communicating our progress toward our global sustainability goals.
Our Commitment to Sustainability
At Sumitomo Biorational, we actively support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These global goals were established to help protect peace and prosperity for people and the planet. We are proud that our biorational solutions directly impact many of the SDGs:
- SDG Goal 2: Zero Hunger
End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture.
Designed to support sustainable agriculture, our biorational solutions provide growers with effective solutions that don't harm beneficial insects, help prevent food waste, and support crop quality throughout the season.
Our RyzUp® product is used on 40% of global banana exports and helps eliminate food waste and bring more food to the world by preserving post-harvest shelf life.
- SDG Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being
Ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all ages.
Our Public Health solutions protect and preserve the public health of our community and safeguard 1.2 billion people worldwide from mosquitoes and the diseases they carry.
Responsible pest management solutions from the Environmental Health Division (MGK) help protect people, homes, and communities from the impact of insects. Annually, our Environmental Health products help improve the lives of more than 29 million people worldwide.
- SDG Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.
The Jiri-Rita Prairie Park, established in 2021, sequesters 170 tons of CO₂ annually and supports local wildlife. Adjacent to it, the Maple City Solar Field, launched in 2022, generates 3.4 million kilowatt hours of solar power yearly, enough for 425 homes.
Our Environmental Health Division (MGK) prioritizes renewable energy wherever possible. Our Minnesota facilities operate on 100% renewable electricity, helping avoid approximately 2,355 metric tons of CO₂e emissions in 2025.
- SDG Goal 15: Life on Land
Protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, and halt biodiversity loss.
Our Forest Health solutions protect and preserve 5.6 million acres of forest lands across North America.
Our MycoApply products enhance plant productivity and long-term soil health, contributing to carbon sequestration and enhancing functional microbial diversity and carbon cycling.
